Chill in the summer. Invest in an Air Conditioner

Window units, Central air conditioners, Split air conditioners, portable air conditioners, desert coolersThe Indian summer is getting hotter by the year. The golden rays of the sun and the emanating heat can aggravate the best tempered person. Nights are not any cooler or soothing. The moist air thrown by a Desert Cooler is fast becoming ineffective as humidity levels soar with the onset of rains.

An air conditioner is the most effective way of staying cool. And staying cool doesn't necessarily mean you have to spend a fortune. Air conditioners can quickly cool a boiling bedroom or other hot spots in your house for as low as Rs 10,000. With the rising mercury, the demand for air conditioners too has been on the rise. The types of air conditioning units are:

Window Units

The window AC unit is by far, the most common and the cheapest amongst the various types of air conditioners available today. It is designed to cool a small area or a portion of large premises. Typically a wall-mounted device, it is made to fit into standard window frame sizes. Thus, it is quick to install, doesn't occupy any floor space, can be an unplanned addition to your house and above all, is easy on your pocket.

A good branded window AC unit can be bought for as little as Rs 10,000. You can get a better bargain if you buy it during off-season by availing offers from brands across the country.

Split AC units

The split AC splits the hot side from the cold side of the system. Of the three main components namely a condenser, an evaporator and a compressor in a split system, the condenser and compressor are located in an outdoor unit. The third part, the evaporator, is mounted on the air-handling unit. Unlike the window unit where every mechanism is packed into a single package, the split system separates the condensing unit outside the house. Their price range starts from Rs 20,000.

Central AC units

Central air conditioning units are by far the best and definitely the most expensive of the various types of ACs. It is a huge system, in sharp contrast to a window AC unit or even the split AC. As the name implies, it is located centrally and throws cool air to every room and pumps the hot air away from all the rooms through ducts. Such ACs are meant to cool a substantially larger area of the house or building.

Installing central ACs calls for extensive planning and significant changes to the existing structure. One needs qualified and trained professionals for the job. Since Central ACs can cool larger areas of the house, it does not make sense to invest in a central air conditioning system for rented apartments or homes. These are ideal for commercial uses, showrooms, multiplexes, large conference rooms, as well as domestic applications like large living rooms, etc.

Portable AC

The portable AC is not yet popular in India. The special feature of this device is that it needs no installation procedure. It can be moved around to any place that needs cooling. This electronic portable air conditioner can be used from room to room with ease. It provides supplemental cooling and heating for a room up to 450 sq. ft. Portable AC is available for around Rs 20,000.

Cooling Capacity

Cooling Capacity of ACs is expressed in tons. Window ACs are typically of one ton or 1.5 ton capacity. Split ACs, too, come in different capacities of 1 ton to 2 tons.

Dual purpose ACs

Several companies are now offering ACs that perform the dual function of cooling during summers and warming during the winters. This feature is particularly ideal for places that experience extreme weather.

If you are still wondering about the kind of AC you should buy, the less expensive window unit or go for split units, your decision depends solely on your power to spend.
